Phosgene

First prepared by John Davy in 1811, phosgene was often used in combination with its chemical cousin, diphosgene.  Phosgene is an insidious and persistent chemical warfare agent causing slow death, usually via pulmonary edema.  It is estimated that phosgene was responsible for the majority of fatalities caused by chemical agents in World War I.
