While not the first chemical agent used during the war, the release of chlorine gas against French and Algerian troops at the Battle of Ypres in April 1915 represents, for many, the dawn of the age of chemical warfare.  It was Fritz Haber, the future chemistry Nobel Laureate, who engineered this initial chlorine gas attack.
