Now We Can Make Anything

So, organic chemistry has come a long way from its simple beginnings.  In a certain sense, the science may have reached its peak in 1972 when Albert Eschenmoser (b. 1925) of the Swiss Institute of Technology and Robert Woodward (1917-1979) of Harvard synthesized the very complex naturally occurring molecule we know as vitamin B-12.  To many observers, this amazing synthesis represented more than just another major synthetic accomplishment.  It represented, more generally, that organic chemists could essentially synthesize virtually any complex molecule produced by nature.  And that, dear reader, is truly amazing!!!
